With a base of oats, granola bars are a mix of different ingredients such as oats, nuts, coconut, chocolate chips, fruits etc. Granola bars can be baked or unbaked and are popularly eaten for breakfast or a snack anytime of the day. Granola bars are widely known as healthy snacks however, it is very important to identify what kind of granola bar it is that you are consuming. The ingredients that make up a granola bar can vary from all-natural and wholesome to full of sugars, and artificial ingredients.
When buying or consuming granola bars, you should keep in mind the following:
• Check the ingredients list to see what is in it. Ingredients, as a rule, will list contents by weight and so the items listed first are the most in quantity and so on. Most ingredients in the list should be those you recognize and are okay with consuming.
• In continuation to the previous point, lots of artificial ingredients and preservatives may prolong the shelf life of the product but do not add any nutritional value. Hence, opt for products that are free of these additives.
• A lot of granola bars are loaded with refined flours and sugars which add up the calories but not the nutrition. So chose those with natural sweeteners (such as honey) and added power foods like nuts and seeds.
• A granola bar should be full of protein, fiber and vitamins and minerals so check the nutritional facts on the label.
